Narrative:
IFR oceano (L52) to fullerton (ful). I was on victor 186 and was to turn right on V-394 at adamm intersection. This was the third route cleared. I filed to turn at pirro intersection direct ful and received that clearance. In mogo approach airspace, I was given a new route of V-186 to V-459 turning at darts intersection to sli, then later changed again to V-186 to V-394. I set each of these rtes into the RNAV changing as I received new clrncs. The distance from vny 113.1 to adamm intersection is, on the low altitude chart broken into 5 sections of 12 mi, 5 mi, 5 mi, 11 mi, and 3 mi. I missed the last 3 mi section (chart very crowded with numbers, etc, in that area). I turned right 3 mi short of V-394, turning to a heading of 187 degrees. About 2 mins later, ATC asked for a 90 degree turn to left and strongly reprimanded me on the error. I should have had V-394 dialed into my #2 VOR but had been preoccupied with attempting to enter it into the new GPS.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PVT INSTRUMENT RATED PLT OF AN SMA SEL FAILED TO FOLLOW ASSIGNED CLRNC, MAKING AN ERROR IN SETTING THE RNAV DISTANCE INFO.
Narrative: IFR OCEANO (L52) TO FULLERTON (FUL). I WAS ON VICTOR 186 AND WAS TO TURN R ON V-394 AT ADAMM INTXN. THIS WAS THE THIRD RTE CLRED. I FILED TO TURN AT PIRRO INTXN DIRECT FUL AND RECEIVED THAT CLRNC. IN MOGO APCH AIRSPACE, I WAS GIVEN A NEW RTE OF V-186 TO V-459 TURNING AT DARTS INTXN TO SLI, THEN LATER CHANGED AGAIN TO V-186 TO V-394. I SET EACH OF THESE RTES INTO THE RNAV CHANGING AS I RECEIVED NEW CLRNCS. THE DISTANCE FROM VNY 113.1 TO ADAMM INTXN IS, ON THE LOW ALT CHART BROKEN INTO 5 SECTIONS OF 12 MI, 5 MI, 5 MI, 11 MI, AND 3 MI. I MISSED THE LAST 3 MI SECTION (CHART VERY CROWDED WITH NUMBERS, ETC, IN THAT AREA). I TURNED R 3 MI SHORT OF V-394, TURNING TO A HDG OF 187 DEGS. ABOUT 2 MINS LATER, ATC ASKED FOR A 90 DEG TURN TO L AND STRONGLY REPRIMANDED ME ON THE ERROR. I SHOULD HAVE HAD V-394 DIALED INTO MY #2 VOR BUT HAD BEEN PREOCCUPIED WITH ATTEMPTING TO ENTER IT INTO THE NEW GPS.
