Narrative:
This was an instrument competency and currency ride. I was accompanied by an instructor (cfii). I had been flying under the hood for almost 2 hours. We had been holding at 4000 ft at rejoy intersection when I received clearance to fly 'the complete approach' (NDB runway 19R concord, ca). I started to fly 074 degree radial inbound to sgd VOR which the initial leg of the no procedure turn for the approach from rejoy. The instructor told me to proceed direct to the NDB. Due to fatigue, lack of assertiveness brought on by non-currency and unusual instruments, I did not question this direction. I trusted the instructor too much. After a few mins, approach called us and told we were off course and gave us a vector. I immediately knew what the problem was, explained to approach our misunderstanding and we received a new clearance to fly the approach. The instructor had never seen a no procedure turn approach before!

AFTER A FEW MINS, APCH CALLED US AND TOLD WE WERE OFF COURSE AND GAVE US A VECTOR. I IMMEDIATELY KNEW WHAT THE PROB WAS, EXPLAINED TO APCH OUR MISUNDERSTANDING AND WE RECEIVED A NEW CLRNC TO FLY THE APCH. THE INSTRUCTOR HAD NEVER SEEN A NO PROC TURN APCH BEFORE!
