Narrative:

The flight was cleared to 10000 ft MSL. At approximately 9000 ft, I left ATC frequency to call our out/off times to company. By the time I 'came back' to ATC and the cockpit, the captain was climbing through 10300 ft. I immediately told him our altitude was 10000 ft and he corrected. By the time a descent was initiated to 10000 ft, we had flown up to 10500 ft. Several sits were at play here: first, we were on the last leg of a very long day (9TH leg of a 7 hour 45 min day). We were both fairly tired. To add to the flight time and leg #, we were flying in IMC conditions for most of the day. Second, I should have waited until we leveled off, performed a cruise check, that way my head would have been in the cockpit alert to the fact that the captain was climbing through the assigned altitude.

Title: ALT OVERSHOOT DURING CLB.

Narrative: THE FLT WAS CLRED TO 10000 FT MSL. AT APPROX 9000 FT, I LEFT ATC FREQ TO CALL OUR OUT/OFF TIMES TO COMPANY. BY THE TIME I 'CAME BACK' TO ATC AND THE COCKPIT, THE CAPT WAS CLBING THROUGH 10300 FT. I IMMEDIATELY TOLD HIM OUR ALT WAS 10000 FT AND HE CORRECTED. BY THE TIME A DSCNT WAS INITIATED TO 10000 FT, WE HAD FLOWN UP TO 10500 FT. SEVERAL SITS WERE AT PLAY HERE: FIRST, WE WERE ON THE LAST LEG OF A VERY LONG DAY (9TH LEG OF A 7 HR 45 MIN DAY). WE WERE BOTH FAIRLY TIRED. TO ADD TO THE FLT TIME AND LEG #, WE WERE FLYING IN IMC CONDITIONS FOR MOST OF THE DAY. SECOND, I SHOULD HAVE WAITED UNTIL WE LEVELED OFF, PERFORMED A CRUISE CHK, THAT WAY MY HEAD WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE COCKPIT ALERT TO THE FACT THAT THE CAPT WAS CLBING THROUGH THE ASSIGNED ALT.
