Narrative:
Combination of moderate turbulence and the autoplt failed to capture an intermediate altitude of 17000 ft. When I realized the autoplt was not capturing, took manual control. Nevertheless, with the moderate turbulence, we still overshot by approximately 400 ft. We were warned of the turbulence at 16000 ft with a relatively empty aircraft. A warning about the turbulence sooner would have helped. Often ATC does not advise about turbulence. It should be done without asking.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ALT OVERSHOOT DURING CLB.
Narrative: COMBINATION OF MODERATE TURB AND THE AUTOPLT FAILED TO CAPTURE AN INTERMEDIATE ALT OF 17000 FT. WHEN I REALIZED THE AUTOPLT WAS NOT CAPTURING, TOOK MANUAL CTL. NEVERTHELESS, WITH THE MODERATE TURB, WE STILL OVERSHOT BY APPROX 400 FT. WE WERE WARNED OF THE TURB AT 16000 FT WITH A RELATIVELY EMPTY ACFT. A WARNING ABOUT THE TURB SOONER WOULD HAVE HELPED. OFTEN ATC DOES NOT ADVISE ABOUT TURB. IT SHOULD BE DONE WITHOUT ASKING.
