Narrative:
Our flight began in the morning lga-msp-lga-dtw. Due to a series of miscoms the flight attendant notified the captain and myself that she would be 'writing us up in dtw.' this notification was made known 400 mi out of dtw. At 13 mi out, we were cleared for the visual to runway 21L and told to slow to 150 KTS, following a DC9 3 mi ahead. I called for all the checklists and became very aware of the strong crosswind. We added 10 KTS to our vref. At 400 ft I queried the captain as to whether or not we had clearance to land. We landed. I dialed in the tower frequency and said 'how do you read this transmitter?' loud and clear was the response. In hindsight, I guess we were both thinking of what the flight attendant had said 400 mi before. Approach control never told us to contact the tower at the marker, he asked us to slow down. I landed because the runway was clear and due to the high crosswind this was the safest channel to take.

Title: ACR FLC LANDED WITHOUT A CLRNC TO LAND.
Narrative: OUR FLT BEGAN IN THE MORNING LGA-MSP-LGA-DTW. DUE TO A SERIES OF MISCOMS THE FLT ATTENDANT NOTIFIED THE CAPT AND MYSELF THAT SHE WOULD BE 'WRITING US UP IN DTW.' THIS NOTIFICATION WAS MADE KNOWN 400 MI OUT OF DTW. AT 13 MI OUT, WE WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL TO RWY 21L AND TOLD TO SLOW TO 150 KTS, FOLLOWING A DC9 3 MI AHEAD. I CALLED FOR ALL THE CHKLISTS AND BECAME VERY AWARE OF THE STRONG XWIND. WE ADDED 10 KTS TO OUR VREF. AT 400 FT I QUERIED THE CAPT AS TO WHETHER OR NOT WE HAD CLRNC TO LAND. WE LANDED. I DIALED IN THE TWR FREQ AND SAID 'HOW DO YOU READ THIS XMITTER?' LOUD AND CLR WAS THE RESPONSE. IN HINDSIGHT, I GUESS WE WERE BOTH THINKING OF WHAT THE FLT ATTENDANT HAD SAID 400 MI BEFORE. APCH CTL NEVER TOLD US TO CONTACT THE TWR AT THE MARKER, HE ASKED US TO SLOW DOWN. I LANDED BECAUSE THE RWY WAS CLR AND DUE TO THE HIGH XWIND THIS WAS THE SAFEST CHANNEL TO TAKE.
