Narrative:
This was a student training flight mainly for the purpose of basic instrument training in preparation for the private certificate. The student is young (16 yrs) and has above average ability. He has soloed and accumulated about 30 hours. On this particular flight he asked and I agreed to having a young (male) friend along. Prior to leaving he indicated he wished to make a short local flight solo after our dual session. After landing we taxied to the terminal. At that time we had a short discussion about whether he should come inside for his postflt critique then or after his return solo. It was getting late and he was concerned that I had a long drive home. I indicated that I chose to stay while he was flying, that we would critique after his return from solo, that I would do the paperwork while he was gone and refuel the aircraft after his return. All the time the passenger is sitting in the rear. I got out, walked into the terminal and waited for his return. After his return he said 'was I in violation for taking my friend?' I was flabbergasted, having completely forgotten about the passenger. My student has passed his written, but apparently my indifference to his passenger's presence was taken as condoning his taking his friend along. I cannot explain my oversight. I am a competent older instructor and feel I am super conscientious about conforming to the FARS.

Title: STUDENT PLT CARRIES PAX.
Narrative: THIS WAS A STUDENT TRAINING FLT MAINLY FOR THE PURPOSE OF BASIC INST TRAINING IN PREPARATION FOR THE PVT CERTIFICATE. THE STUDENT IS YOUNG (16 YRS) AND HAS ABOVE AVERAGE ABILITY. HE HAS SOLOED AND ACCUMULATED ABOUT 30 HRS. ON THIS PARTICULAR FLT HE ASKED AND I AGREED TO HAVING A YOUNG (MALE) FRIEND ALONG. PRIOR TO LEAVING HE INDICATED HE WISHED TO MAKE A SHORT LCL FLT SOLO AFTER OUR DUAL SESSION. AFTER LNDG WE TAXIED TO THE TERMINAL. I INDICATED THAT I CHOSE TO STAY WHILE HE WAS FLYING, THAT WE WOULD CRITIQUE AFTER HIS RETURN FROM SOLO, THAT I WOULD DO THE PAPERWORK WHILE HE WAS GONE AND REFUEL THE ACFT AFTER HIS RETURN. ALL THE TIME THE PAX IS SITTING IN THE REAR. I GOT OUT, WALKED INTO THE TERMINAL AND WAITED FOR HIS RETURN. AFTER HIS RETURN HE SAID 'WAS I IN VIOLATION FOR TAKING MY FRIEND?' I WAS FLABBERGASTED, HAVING COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN ABOUT THE PAX. MY STUDENT HAS PASSED HIS WRITTEN, BUT APPARENTLY MY INDIFFERENCE TO HIS PAX'S PRESENCE WAS TAKEN AS CONDONING HIS TAKING HIS FRIEND ALONG. I CANNOT EXPLAIN MY OVERSIGHT. I AM A COMPETENT OLDER INSTRUCTOR AND FEEL I AM SUPER CONSCIENTIOUS ABOUT CONFORMING TO THE FARS.
