Narrative:
The newark 4 SID we were on calls for a turn to 290 degrees at 4 DME on the iewr ILS runway 4L. I had tuned 110.75 on the ILS but neglected to change my HSI mode selector to ILS from map. My RDMI DME-right thus did not read out the proper DME. Once airborne I turned to the initial 060 degree heading and finally realized that my HSI mode selector was not on ILS. At this time I was busy flying the aircraft and cleaning up the aircraft. Adding to the workload was the low- altitude (2500 ft) level off and the fact that the VNAV early capture had to have the airspeed manually reset to clean speed. We probably got 5 mi beyond the turn-to 290 degrees turn point before receiving vectors to 330 degrees from ewr departure.

Title: FAILURE TO ADHERE TO SID INSTRUCTIONS.
Narrative: THE NEWARK 4 SID WE WERE ON CALLS FOR A TURN TO 290 DEGS AT 4 DME ON THE IEWR ILS RWY 4L. I HAD TUNED 110.75 ON THE ILS BUT NEGLECTED TO CHANGE MY HSI MODE SELECTOR TO ILS FROM MAP. MY RDMI DME-R THUS DID NOT READ OUT THE PROPER DME. ONCE AIRBORNE I TURNED TO THE INITIAL 060 DEG HDG AND FINALLY REALIZED THAT MY HSI MODE SELECTOR WAS NOT ON ILS. AT THIS TIME I WAS BUSY FLYING THE ACFT AND CLEANING UP THE ACFT. ADDING TO THE WORKLOAD WAS THE LOW- ALT (2500 FT) LEVEL OFF AND THE FACT THAT THE VNAV EARLY CAPTURE HAD TO HAVE THE AIRSPD MANUALLY RESET TO CLEAN SPD. WE PROBABLY GOT 5 MI BEYOND THE TURN-TO 290 DEGS TURN POINT BEFORE RECEIVING VECTORS TO 330 DEGS FROM EWR DEP.
