Narrative:
Runway incursion ord. We were cleared to taxi to runway 4L via silver 1, txwys a, A6, J, west. Taxiing out, the first officer tried to enter runway 4L as the takeoff runway into the FMS. However, it would not accept it and kept L32L which had been data- linked up when I pulled up the flight plan. He was evidently able to get runway 4L into the FMS but the navigation display still showed L32L. We discussed this discrepancy as we continued to taxi. I missed the turn onto taxiway west and approached numbers for runway 9L. Tower cleared us onto hold on runway 4L which the first officer repeated. However I taxied onto runway 9L. We realized we were on runway 9L about the same time the tower did. They said no problem and cleared us for takeoff. In retrospect it would obviously have been better to have stopped the aircraft and solved the FMS problem. A contributing factor was that it was nighttime and our visual cues were not the same as during the day.

Title: RWY INCURSION IN A NIGHT OP.
Narrative: RWY INCURSION ORD. WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 4L VIA SILVER 1, TXWYS A, A6, J, W. TAXIING OUT, THE FO TRIED TO ENTER RWY 4L AS THE TKOF RWY INTO THE FMS. HOWEVER, IT WOULD NOT ACCEPT IT AND KEPT L32L WHICH HAD BEEN DATA- LINKED UP WHEN I PULLED UP THE FLT PLAN. HE WAS EVIDENTLY ABLE TO GET RWY 4L INTO THE FMS BUT THE NAV DISPLAY STILL SHOWED L32L. WE DISCUSSED THIS DISCREPANCY AS WE CONTINUED TO TAXI. I MISSED THE TURN ONTO TXWY W AND APCHED NUMBERS FOR RWY 9L. TWR CLRED US ONTO HOLD ON RWY 4L WHICH THE FO REPEATED. HOWEVER I TAXIED ONTO RWY 9L. WE REALIZED WE WERE ON RWY 9L ABOUT THE SAME TIME THE TWR DID. THEY SAID NO PROB AND CLRED US FOR TKOF. IN RETROSPECT IT WOULD OBVIOUSLY HAVE BEEN BETTER TO HAVE STOPPED THE ACFT AND SOLVED THE FMS PROB. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS THAT IT WAS NIGHTTIME AND OUR VISUAL CUES WERE NOT THE SAME AS DURING THE DAY.
