Narrative:

Just after departing providence airport, 'a' flight attendant called up front to advise crew that the forward galley door safety strap was hanging outside aircraft and banging violently against side of aircraft. We advised pvd tower and immediately returned to the airport and taxied to gate. Safety strap was restowed, aircraft inspected for damage by captain and company mechanic. No damage to aircraft -- logbook was signed off by mechanic and aircraft released. Safety straps are visually bright yellow in color -- this one was grey. No one on ground noticed strap hanging out door due to color of strap blending with aluminum colored aircraft. Flight attendants did not notice strap was not stowed after catering truck had left. Safety door straps should be yellow or orange to prevent this from happening again.
