Narrative:
Overshot altitude about 600 ft during climb. During climb, we were cleared to deviate around small rain showers, then given a heading, during this time the captain headphone on boom microphone was intermittent. First officer was flying and looked for spare headset, altitude alert went off. Returned to assigned altitude. An aural horn at 1000 ft before assigned altitude would be helpful. The type used in other airplanes. Supplemental information from acn 318346: 1000 ft to go callout was missed because of other distrs. (1) on takeoff from fll deviations were requested around build-ups. 2) captain's headset failed. 3) first officer was giving captain spare headset on first officer side of cockpit while hand flying around build-ups.) heads up flying to visually deviate around thunderstorms did not include observation of visual altitude light on altimeter. My recommendation is to use an aural as well as visual light in all altimeters to 'sound off' 1000 ft to go.

Title: THE FLC CLBED 600 FT THROUGH THE ASSIGNED ALT. ALT CALLOUT PROC MISSED.
Narrative: OVERSHOT ALT ABOUT 600 FT DURING CLB. DURING CLB, WE WERE CLRED TO DEVIATE AROUND SMALL RAIN SHOWERS, THEN GIVEN A HDG, DURING THIS TIME THE CAPT HEADPHONE ON BOOM MIKE WAS INTERMITTENT. FO WAS FLYING AND LOOKED FOR SPARE HEADSET, ALT ALERT WENT OFF. RETURNED TO ASSIGNED ALT. AN AURAL HORN AT 1000 FT BEFORE ASSIGNED ALT WOULD BE HELPFUL. THE TYPE USED IN OTHER AIRPLANES. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 318346: 1000 FT TO GO CALLOUT WAS MISSED BECAUSE OF OTHER DISTRS. (1) ON TKOF FROM FLL DEVS WERE REQUESTED AROUND BUILD-UPS. 2) CAPT'S HEADSET FAILED. 3) FO WAS GIVING CAPT SPARE HEADSET ON FO SIDE OF COCKPIT WHILE HAND FLYING AROUND BUILD-UPS.) HEADS UP FLYING TO VISUALLY DEVIATE AROUND TSTMS DID NOT INCLUDE OBSERVATION OF VISUAL ALT LIGHT ON ALTIMETER. MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO USE AN AURAL AS WELL AS VISUAL LIGHT IN ALL ALTIMETERS TO 'SOUND OFF' 1000 FT TO GO.
