Narrative:
During climb out from cvg en route to oma at approximately 12000 ft altitude, first officer started checklist procedure for failed #2 generator, which dropped off line right after takeoff. Corrective procedure is to attempt reset of failed generator. Generator would not reset, so APU was started to bring APU generator on line. First officer attempted to reset generator and it is suspected that the #1 generator was mistakenly reset causing a momentary loss of main electrical power, loss of cathode ray tubes and numerous messages on TCASII warning page. As PF I transitioned to standby instruments until primary instruments were restored. An emergency was declared to ATC and a request to return to cvg was accomplished. Because of the loss of electrical power, the air driven generator was automatically deployed on the aircraft. Normal landing was accomplished in cvg under VMC conditions. Flight crew was on the back side of a continuous duty trip, 2ND day. Both pilots were about the 50 hour mark for the month when this incident occurred.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MDT HAS GENERATOR FAILURE JUST AFTER TKOF.
Narrative: DURING CLBOUT FROM CVG ENRTE TO OMA AT APPROX 12000 FT ALT, FO STARTED CHKLIST PROC FOR FAILED #2 GENERATOR, WHICH DROPPED OFF LINE RIGHT AFTER TKOF. CORRECTIVE PROC IS TO ATTEMPT RESET OF FAILED GENERATOR. GENERATOR WOULD NOT RESET, SO APU WAS STARTED TO BRING APU GENERATOR ON LINE. FO ATTEMPTED TO RESET GENERATOR AND IT IS SUSPECTED THAT THE #1 GENERATOR WAS MISTAKENLY RESET CAUSING A MOMENTARY LOSS OF MAIN ELECTRICAL PWR, LOSS OF CATHODE RAY TUBES AND NUMEROUS MESSAGES ON TCASII WARNING PAGE. AS PF I TRANSITIONED TO STANDBY INSTS UNTIL PRIMARY INSTS WERE RESTORED. AN EMER WAS DECLARED TO ATC AND A REQUEST TO RETURN TO CVG WAS ACCOMPLISHED. BECAUSE OF THE LOSS OF ELECTRICAL PWR, THE AIR DRIVEN GENERATOR WAS AUTOMATICALLY DEPLOYED ON THE ACFT. NORMAL LNDG WAS ACCOMPLISHED IN CVG UNDER VMC CONDITIONS. FLC WAS ON THE BACK SIDE OF A CONTINUOUS DUTY TRIP, 2ND DAY. BOTH PLTS WERE ABOUT THE 50 HR MARK FOR THE MONTH WHEN THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED.
