Narrative:
After completing my 300 mi cross country solo flight (from int- flo-dan-int) I was on the ground at int taxiing back to hangar on a taxiway which took me back across runway 15/33. Although I had not heard any hold short instructions, I stopped, tried to talk to tower, looked for light signal to allow me to proceed. I did not receive any light signals from tower. After making sure no other aircraft was approaching I expedited my crossing of runway 15. At this point, let me inform you that I had been experiencing intermittent radio communication problems, which I informed tower operator about after I made first contact with him. After proceeding to cross runway 15 and taxiing to hangar, I managed to re-establish communications with tower operator at which time he proceeded to 'chew me out royally,' so to speak. I once again informed him of the problem I had been having but he was not pleased. I've landed at this airport 100 plus times before and I've always complied with instructions I receive. Upon inspection of radio equipment in aircraft and upon my headset, it was determined that my communication problem more than likely was caused by a loose connection (which has been corrected) in my headset. I did not hear the hold short instruction.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: STUDENT PLT FAILS TO HOLD SHORT OF A RWY DURING TAXI TO PARKING DUE TO LOST COMS.
Narrative: AFTER COMPLETING MY 300 MI XCOUNTRY SOLO FLT (FROM INT- FLO-DAN-INT) I WAS ON THE GND AT INT TAXIING BACK TO HANGAR ON A TXWY WHICH TOOK ME BACK ACROSS RWY 15/33. ALTHOUGH I HAD NOT HEARD ANY HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTIONS, I STOPPED, TRIED TO TALK TO TWR, LOOKED FOR LIGHT SIGNAL TO ALLOW ME TO PROCEED. I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY LIGHT SIGNALS FROM TWR. AFTER MAKING SURE NO OTHER ACFT WAS APCHING I EXPEDITED MY XING OF RWY 15. AT THIS POINT, LET ME INFORM YOU THAT I HAD BEEN EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT RADIO COM PROBS, WHICH I INFORMED TWR OPERATOR ABOUT AFTER I MADE FIRST CONTACT WITH HIM. AFTER PROCEEDING TO CROSS RWY 15 AND TAXIING TO HANGAR, I MANAGED TO RE-ESTABLISH COMS WITH TWR OPERATOR AT WHICH TIME HE PROCEEDED TO 'CHEW ME OUT ROYALLY,' SO TO SPEAK. I ONCE AGAIN INFORMED HIM OF THE PROB I HAD BEEN HAVING BUT HE WAS NOT PLEASED. I'VE LANDED AT THIS ARPT 100 PLUS TIMES BEFORE AND I'VE ALWAYS COMPLIED WITH INSTRUCTIONS I RECEIVE. UPON INSPECTION OF RADIO EQUIP IN ACFT AND UPON MY HEADSET, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT MY COM PROB MORE THAN LIKELY WAS CAUSED BY A LOOSE CONNECTION (WHICH HAS BEEN CORRECTED) IN MY HEADSET. I DID NOT HEAR THE HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTION.
