Narrative:
The airplane failed extensive magneto checks and usual fixes for failed magneto checks. I moved the aircraft to the mouth of the run-up pad and aimed back to the ramp but stopped on the run-up pad. I was trying to contact ground control. It was busy. Here comes an airplane. Taxi out of the way, no sweat. Now back to indicate to ground I wish to go back to the ramp. It's a long taxiway back. I wait and listen for a break on ground. Ground control is busy. I try to check the magnetos again, but I still find 2 dead cylinders on 1 magneto. I tell ground I need to return to the ramp. Ground tells opposing traffic to clear the taxiway. When the opposing traffic clears, I begin to taxi. You see, somebody else is talking to ground, and ground is talking to them about a standard taxi clearance to the active. Since I am going the wrong way, I hurry it up. Ground tells me to note for the future that I should wait for clearance to taxi. Oh, well, thought I was helping. And also impatient, I was.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PLT OF A SINGLE-ENG ACFT RELOCATED THE ACFT WHILE IN THE RUN-UP AREA, THEN FOUND IT NECESSARY TO RETURN TO ORIGINATION POINT. PLT TAXIED WITHOUT A CLRNC. UNAUTH TAXI.
Narrative: THE AIRPLANE FAILED EXTENSIVE MAGNETO CHKS AND USUAL FIXES FOR FAILED MAGNETO CHKS. I MOVED THE ACFT TO THE MOUTH OF THE RUN-UP PAD AND AIMED BACK TO THE RAMP BUT STOPPED ON THE RUN-UP PAD. I WAS TRYING TO CONTACT GND CTL. IT WAS BUSY. HERE COMES AN AIRPLANE. TAXI OUT OF THE WAY, NO SWEAT. NOW BACK TO INDICATE TO GND I WISH TO GO BACK TO THE RAMP. IT'S A LONG TXWY BACK. I WAIT AND LISTEN FOR A BREAK ON GND. GND CTL IS BUSY. I TRY TO CHK THE MAGNETOS AGAIN, BUT I STILL FIND 2 DEAD CYLINDERS ON 1 MAGNETO. I TELL GND I NEED TO RETURN TO THE RAMP. GND TELLS OPPOSING TFC TO CLR THE TXWY. WHEN THE OPPOSING TFC CLRS, I BEGIN TO TAXI. YOU SEE, SOMEBODY ELSE IS TALKING TO GND, AND GND IS TALKING TO THEM ABOUT A STANDARD TAXI CLRNC TO THE ACTIVE. SINCE I AM GOING THE WRONG WAY, I HURRY IT UP. GND TELLS ME TO NOTE FOR THE FUTURE THAT I SHOULD WAIT FOR CLRNC TO TAXI. OH, WELL, THOUGHT I WAS HELPING. AND ALSO IMPATIENT, I WAS.
