Narrative:
Busted altitude on climb out from bis. First officer picked up clearance from ground control prior to my arrival in the cockpit. On pretkof checks the first officer read the clearance he picked up except he set 8000 ft into the altitude alerter instead of 7000 ft, which we were cleared to. We climbed out and were queried by departure climbing through 7800 ft. We immediately requested a clearance for 8000 ft, which we received. I feel partially to blame because we were headed east and climbing to an even altitude. My first officer responded, when I asked him why he had set in 8000 ft, that he just plain made a mistake and doesn't know why.
