Narrative:
Descended through assigned altitude by 700 ft. Immediately corrected back to altitude in visual conditions looking for airport. PF should have continued flying aircraft while PNF looked outside. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states that the conflict warning system was activated and that the FAA is investigating a traffic conflict. Reporter (captain) also states that during conversation with ATC afterwards, he was not informed of the serious nature of this incident. The sabre 60 cockpit is noisy and the altitude alerter was not heard by the crew members. Recognition of the altitude deviation was by the captain (PNF) and the first officer (PF) who was correcting when ATC intervened. Supplemental information from acn 320524: I was assigned 8000 ft. While looking for the field, I descended 700 ft below the assigned altitude.

Title: PART 135 SABRE 60 OVERSHOT DSCNT CLRNC ALT WHILE CREW MEMBERS WERE SEARCHING FOR ARPT. UNDER FAA INVESTIGATION.
Narrative: DSNDED THROUGH ASSIGNED ALT BY 700 FT. IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED BACK TO ALT IN VISUAL CONDITIONS LOOKING FOR ARPT. PF SHOULD HAVE CONTINUED FLYING ACFT WHILE PNF LOOKED OUTSIDE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES THAT THE CONFLICT WARNING SYS WAS ACTIVATED AND THAT THE FAA IS INVESTIGATING A TFC CONFLICT. RPTR (CAPT) ALSO STATES THAT DURING CONVERSATION WITH ATC AFTERWARDS, HE WAS NOT INFORMED OF THE SERIOUS NATURE OF THIS INCIDENT. THE SABRE 60 COCKPIT IS NOISY AND THE ALT ALERTER WAS NOT HEARD BY THE CREW MEMBERS. RECOGNITION OF THE ALTDEV WAS BY THE CAPT (PNF) AND THE FO (PF) WHO WAS CORRECTING WHEN ATC INTERVENED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 320524: I WAS ASSIGNED 8000 FT. WHILE LOOKING FOR THE FIELD, I DSNDED 700 FT BELOW THE ASSIGNED ALT.
