Narrative:

Inbound to lga 4000 ft, current flight conditions appeared different from ATIS at lga. The captain was flying and asked me to rechk the ATIS. The current approach frequency was 125.85 ATIS was 125.95. I reached down and pushed what I thought was VHF #2 then seeing what I thought was the ATIS frequency switched the frequency. At the same time I punched up VHF #2 and started checking the ATIS. After about 30 seconds, I switched back to VHF #1. I didn't have the right kind of calls for approach and after double-checking the frequency realized the wrong frequency was tuned. I immediately switched back to right frequency. We were off frequency 30 seconds to 1 min. At no time were we in conflict with other aircraft. ATC had us turn after we checked back in. The design of the A320 radio is prone to these types of problems. One has to be absolutely sure the right light is illuminated before changing frequency. Also, one cannot be in a hurry.

Title: IMPROPER USAGE OF THE RADIO MGMNT PANEL (RMP). ACFT OFF FREQ IN CONGESTED APCH AREA.

Narrative: INBOUND TO LGA 4000 FT, CURRENT FLT CONDITIONS APPEARED DIFFERENT FROM ATIS AT LGA. THE CAPT WAS FLYING AND ASKED ME TO RECHK THE ATIS. THE CURRENT APCH FREQ WAS 125.85 ATIS WAS 125.95.
