Narrative:
Started extol 2 arrival to lga at ign. On vectors past basye cleared from 8000 ft MSL to 4000 ft MSL. At about 5500 ft MSL, controller asked us if we were maintaining 6000 ft MSL. We replied we were cleared to 4000 ft, but returned to 6000 ft. Supplemental information from acn 321570: during extensive vectoring for approach we were cleared to descend to 4000 ft. I read back 4000 ft and the first officer set 4000 ft in the altitude alerter.
