Narrative:
While on the TEB5 SID an altitude deviation occurred. A climb above 1500 was commenced before the 4.5 NM teb. I noticed the pilot level off and it appeared he was going to follow the SID. When I looked again a few seconds later I noticed he began to climb above 1500 MSL. I told him to level off that we were not supposed to climb yet. He began a descent back to 1500 MSL. We got about 150-200 above 1500 MSL before the descent to correct the deviation. ATC did not say anything about this. About the same time ATC cleared us up to 10000 MSL. The other pilot and I discussed the situation and how we can avoid this in the future.
