Narrative:
Last day of a 3 day trip. Bna-pit. Short overnight with 10 plus 24 scheduled rest. Arrival pit, approach controller told us to expect runway 28L. At 17 mi from airport given runway 32. WX 500 broken, 1400 overcast and 2 1/2 mi visibility in fog. Controller turned us on 3 mi outside of OM. Aircraft still fast at 250 KTS and slowing, and above GS. Aircraft on autoplt (MD82), gear and flap changes, checklists, briefing and trying to intercept GS before OM, did not hear approach controller hand us over to local tower. Landed without clearance on runway 32. No runway incursions occurred. Contributing factors: inadequate rest, insufficient time to prepare for approach, captain new to aircraft (captain flying, first officer monitoring). Should have taken more time for approach so that we were not rushed. A missed approach would have been appropriate so that we could have kept up with aviating, navigating, and communications! Schedule pressures make you feel like you have to press on. We know we shouldn't do it but it creeps up on you.

Title: FLC FAILED TO CONTACT THE TWR FOR A LNDG CLRNC DURING A FAST AND BUSY APCH IN WX. NO CONFLICTS OCCURRED AS A RESULT OF THE UNAUTH LNDG.
Narrative: LAST DAY OF A 3 DAY TRIP. BNA-PIT. SHORT OVERNIGHT WITH 10 PLUS 24 SCHEDULED REST. ARR PIT, APCH CTLR TOLD US TO EXPECT RWY 28L. AT 17 MI FROM ARPT GIVEN RWY 32. WX 500 BROKEN, 1400 OVCST AND 2 1/2 MI VISIBILITY IN FOG. CTLR TURNED US ON 3 MI OUTSIDE OF OM. ACFT STILL FAST AT 250 KTS AND SLOWING, AND ABOVE GS. ACFT ON AUTOPLT (MD82), GEAR AND FLAP CHANGES, CHKLISTS, BRIEFING AND TRYING TO INTERCEPT GS BEFORE OM, DID NOT HEAR APCH CTLR HAND US OVER TO LCL TWR. LANDED WITHOUT CLRNC ON RWY 32. NO RWY INCURSIONS OCCURRED. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: INADEQUATE REST, INSUFFICIENT TIME TO PREPARE FOR APCH, CAPT NEW TO ACFT (CAPT FLYING, FO MONITORING). SHOULD HAVE TAKEN MORE TIME FOR APCH SO THAT WE WERE NOT RUSHED. A MISSED APCH WOULD HAVE BEEN APPROPRIATE SO THAT WE COULD HAVE KEPT UP WITH AVIATING, NAVING, AND COMS! SCHEDULE PRESSURES MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO PRESS ON. WE KNOW WE SHOULDN'T DO IT BUT IT CREEPS UP ON YOU.
