Narrative:
I was giving my boss dual instruction flight when picking the company airplane up from its annual inspection at gbg. I was very busy in cruise flight watching for traffic, giving dual and navigating with the VOR en route to mut (aircraft home base). I was tracking the 310 degree radial to the mut airport and turned attention to giving dual and watching for traffic. In the mean time, our aircraft came very close to mli's class C airspace (I don't believe we ever entered it). Causing factors were tracking a terminal VOR several mi away (not very accurate) as the means of avoiding mli's airspace. Also, time was about sunset making pilotage difficult. Finally, I am in the habit of radio usage close to class B, C & D airspace, but unfortunately the cabin speaker was unreadable. All these factors led to a near penetration of class C airspace.

Title: INADVERTENT PENETRATION OF CLASS C AIRSPACE.
Narrative: I WAS GIVING MY BOSS DUAL INSTRUCTION FLT WHEN PICKING THE COMPANY AIRPLANE UP FROM ITS ANNUAL INSPECTION AT GBG. I WAS VERY BUSY IN CRUISE FLT WATCHING FOR TFC, GIVING DUAL AND NAVING WITH THE VOR ENRTE TO MUT (ACFT HOME BASE). I WAS TRACKING THE 310 DEG RADIAL TO THE MUT ARPT AND TURNED ATTENTION TO GIVING DUAL AND WATCHING FOR TFC. IN THE MEAN TIME, OUR ACFT CAME VERY CLOSE TO MLI'S CLASS C AIRSPACE (I DON'T BELIEVE WE EVER ENTERED IT). CAUSING FACTORS WERE TRACKING A TERMINAL VOR SEVERAL MI AWAY (NOT VERY ACCURATE) AS THE MEANS OF AVOIDING MLI'S AIRSPACE. ALSO, TIME WAS ABOUT SUNSET MAKING PILOTAGE DIFFICULT. FINALLY, I AM IN THE HABIT OF RADIO USAGE CLOSE TO CLASS B, C & D AIRSPACE, BUT UNFORTUNATELY THE CABIN SPEAKER WAS UNREADABLE. ALL THESE FACTORS LED TO A NEAR PENETRATION OF CLASS C AIRSPACE.
