Narrative:
The assigned altitude and heading on takeoff roll (runway 04R) was 3000 ft and 025 degrees. After contacting mdw departure a new heading of 250 degrees was assigned. The PF was slow to respond to the heading change. (1000 ft to go call was made at 2000 ft as the altitude alerter sounded and the PF verbally responded.) departure then told us to expedite our turn to 250 degrees, as the PF started to turn to 250 degrees I noticed our altitude was going through 3400 ft, my callback to departure was 'we're leveling at 3000 ft and expediting to heading 250 degrees.' the pilot stopped the climb and started down from 3700 ft to 3000 ft. I felt that the headings of 025 degrees and 250 degrees similarity and the call from departure to expedite the turn, along with some problems we've been having with the altitude/select and altitude/hold modes of the flight director were very relevant and distract the PF. We have discussed this situation and we will discuss it in greater depth to correct this problem.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PF MANIFESTED DIFFICULTY TURNING AND LEVELING AT THE SAME TIME. HE WENT ABOVE HIS ASSIGNED ALT 700 FT.
Narrative: THE ASSIGNED ALT AND HEADING ON TKOF ROLL (RWY 04R) WAS 3000 FT AND 025 DEGS. AFTER CONTACTING MDW DEP A NEW HEADING OF 250 DEGS WAS ASSIGNED. THE PF WAS SLOW TO RESPOND TO THE HEADING CHANGE. (1000 FT TO GO CALL WAS MADE AT 2000 FT AS THE ALT ALERTER SOUNDED AND THE PF VERBALLY RESPONDED.) DEP THEN TOLD US TO EXPEDITE OUR TURN TO 250 DEGS, AS THE PF STARTED TO TURN TO 250 DEGS I NOTICED OUR ALT WAS GOING THROUGH 3400 FT, MY CALLBACK TO DEP WAS 'WE'RE LEVELING AT 3000 FT AND EXPEDITING TO HEADING 250 DEGS.' THE PLT STOPPED THE CLB AND STARTED DOWN FROM 3700 FT TO 3000 FT. I FELT THAT THE HEADINGS OF 025 DEGS AND 250 DEGS SIMILARITY AND THE CALL FROM DEP TO EXPEDITE THE TURN, ALONG WITH SOME PROBS WE'VE BEEN HAVING WITH THE ALT/SELECT AND ALT/HOLD MODES OF THE FLT DIRECTOR WERE VERY RELEVANT AND DISTRACT THE PF. WE HAVE DISCUSSED THIS SIT AND WE WILL DISCUSS IT IN GREATER DEPTH TO CORRECT THIS PROB.
