Narrative:
Lots of snow, ice, and rain in bos. My first officer and I were very new to the east coast and bos airport operations. It was snowing so hard that runways were opening and closing 'left and right.' we received taxi instructions to runway 9, stumbled our way there, were given an RVR of 1/2 mi. 'Great, let's go!' we get airborne and an aircraft trying to land in bos is told by approach/departure that he can't land. I think, 'can't land with a 1/2 mi....' we check the approach plates to find out there is no approach to runway 9. Why would all runways be closed at a major airport like bos except for the one runway with no approach. Get my drift: we took off with no takeoff alternate.
