Narrative:
Thought we were cleared to taxi across runway 30L at stl but we misunderstood controller and were not cleared to cross runway. Passed hold line and stopped with aircraft nose on runway edge white line. We should have clarified ATC instructions before proceeding. We heard 'papa' as 'alpha.' telecon with tower said they weren't sure what was said by who either. Will ask for more clarification in future.
