Narrative:
I was flying VFR from syracuse to nashua, nh. Ceiling was 2500 ft in albany -- western massachusetts area -- airmets in effect for icing. I am instrument rated but tried to stay VFR to avoid icing. Got trapped in the valley near pittsfield, ma, airport when it went IMC at 2500 ft. I climbed immediately to avoid mountains in area (2700 ft +/-) and climbed IMC to 4000 ft calling bradley, ct, approach for an immediate IFR clearance. Bradley told me to remain VFR. Told him I couldn't. He told me to maintain 4000 ft. Told him I couldn't (ice) and I needed higher and I got 7000 ft, where temperature was 40 degrees. Rest of trip ok. This was a classic case of 'get homeitis.' I should have put it down at albany.
