Narrative:

Flight from gai, md, to ptk, mi. Filed IFR. WX overcast, tops 5000 ft. Filed for 6000 ft. Stayed on top until detroit approach. Asked approach to let me stay on top until lined up for ILS to avoid possibility of icing. Approach said temperature was '+2 degrees C at 4000 ft, warmer still below 4000 ft.' requested again I descend to 4000 ft. I complied. Began to pick up ice at 4000 ft, and then 3000 ft. Did not drop gear at normal checklist time to avoid possibility of accumulating additional ice. Flew approach faster than usual as a safety precaution. Throttled back for flare only to hear gear warning as plane settled on runway.
