Narrative:
We were scheduled to fly 7 hours and 29 mins on jan/wed/96. By the time we started what was to be our last leg we'd had numerous delays. We took off on the last leg and then had to return to the departure airport for a mechanical problem. The problem was fixed fairly quickly. Dispatch refiled us to bhm (same destination we'd been headed for when we had to return) and we were on our way again. Well when we left that time we'd already had 6 hours 40 mins of flight time for the day. The last leg was scheduled for 1 hour 43 mins, so that would put us well over 8 hours. I guess when we returned to our departure airport our original flight assignment was completed, and sending us to our destination again was a modification or extension of our trip. Since, at the time of the extension, it was known that it would put us over 8 hours, it was illegal. At the time, however, I thought of it as finishing our original trip.
