Narrative:

A B737-222 with JT8D-7 engines. Captain advised FAA inspector reported #1 engine fan blade had damage with large piece missing. Reviewed history of engine and found fan blade tip had been repaired (cropped) in feb/95, approximately 2400 hours previous. I faxed copy of maintenance manual for inspector to compare blade with maintenance manual limits. After discussion, I decided to have local mechanic familiar with the JT8 engine re- evaluate condition/findings. I faxed complete maintenance manual 'first stage fan blade repair/limits' to accomplish complete evaluation. I also reviewed with airlines engine tech services JT8 group. After some discussion, mr. X advised that undercut per maintenance manual was acceptable. He also noted that there was some erosion on leading edge and tip areas, but did not exceed maintenance manual limits for svcable condition.
