Narrative:
We were dispatched with 1 air-conditioning pack inoperative. At FL240, and stabilized, the other pack shut itself down temporarily, enough that cabin started to climb at maximum rate. Got clearance for and descended rapidly, no emergency, to 8000 ft MSL. Barely in time to prevent masks from dropping. Wrote up aircraft.
