Narrative:
Aircraft on the leese 7 arrival to orl airport. Copilot was flying, he was fairly new to the aircraft. Conditions were VFR, daylight. We were cleared to descend to 9000 ft. I made the standard '1000 ft to leveloff' call, at 10000 ft. I watched the copilot go to 9000 ft, but vsi showed a descent rate continuing. I called out altitude, and he began a more gentle leveloff, but not aggressive enough. We leveled at 8700 ft, but immediately climbed back up to 9000 ft. No traffic conflict, or note made by ATC, or flight crew. I believe that I should have been on the copilot more, about his altitude, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I certainly would not have permitted him to go lower, but I should have not let him go below 9000 ft. I think I'll take a more aggressive stance, and actually level the aircraft next time, especially if I know the copilot is new.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN LGT OVERSHOT ALT DURING DSCNT ON AN ARR STAR AND RETURNED TO ASSIGNED IMMEDIATELY.
Narrative: ACFT ON THE LEESE 7 ARR TO ORL ARPT. COPLT WAS FLYING, HE WAS FAIRLY NEW TO THE ACFT. CONDITIONS WERE VFR, DAYLIGHT. WE WERE CLRED TO DSND TO 9000 FT. I MADE THE STANDARD '1000 FT TO LEVELOFF' CALL, AT 10000 FT. I WATCHED THE COPLT GO TO 9000 FT, BUT VSI SHOWED A DSCNT RATE CONTINUING. I CALLED OUT ALT, AND HE BEGAN A MORE GENTLE LEVELOFF, BUT NOT AGGRESSIVE ENOUGH. WE LEVELED AT 8700 FT, BUT IMMEDIATELY CLBED BACK UP TO 9000 FT. NO TFC CONFLICT, OR NOTE MADE BY ATC, OR FLC. I BELIEVE THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE COPLT MORE, ABOUT HIS ALT, BUT I GAVE HIM THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT. I CERTAINLY WOULD NOT HAVE PERMITTED HIM TO GO LOWER, BUT I SHOULD HAVE NOT LET HIM GO BELOW 9000 FT. I THINK I'LL TAKE A MORE AGGRESSIVE STANCE, AND ACTUALLY LEVEL THE ACFT NEXT TIME, ESPECIALLY IF I KNOW THE COPLT IS NEW.
