Narrative:
Time, XX25Z. ATC frequency, sou. ATC facility, socal approach. Location, IPL250/55. While on the baret 4 arrival to san, just west of pillo we were cleared to descend from 10000 ft MSL to 6000 ft MSL, fly a heading of 240 degrees, and intercept the runway 27 localizer. As we were starting to level off at 6500 ft MSL we got a terrain, terrain and pull up GPWS warnings. We were IMC and the captain immediately pushed the throttles to maximum, hit the toga button, punched off the autoplt and rotated the jet to a 25 degree climb. As we leveled at 10000 ft MSL we informed socal approach what we did and why. She stated that the MVA for that area was 6000 ft MSL. We turned to join the localizer, descended, and made an uneventful landing. No explanation for the GPWS warnings.
