Narrative:
On chesterfield 8 arrival aircraft cleared to 5000 ft from 11000 ft. ATIS changed to north landing then back to south landing. Approach asked us to climb to 9000 ft. Passing 6500 ft, approach ask us to level at 6000 ft. Contributing factor was ATIS during approach had south landing, changed to north landing then back to south landing. Supplemental information from acn 329920: during ctf arrival to charlotte, cleared from 11000 ft to 5000 ft. Once level at 5000 ft, approach asked us to verify altitude and climb to 9000 ft. During climb passing 6500 ft approach asked us to level off at 6000 ft. Contributing to the possible confusion was the 3 changes in the ATIS at the time from landing runway 18 to landing runway 36 then back to landing runway 18. Considerable discussion on the approach frequency about the change.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B73S FLC RPTED THAT THEY RECEIVED A CLRNC DOWN TO 5000 FT WHILE ON THE ARR INTO CLT. ONCE LEVEL AT 5000 FT, THEY WERE QUESTIONED BY THE CTLR ABOUT THEIR ALT AND TOLD TO CLB BACK UP TO 9000 FT. THE CREW RPTS THAT THIS PROB OCCURRED DURING A CHANGE BTWN LNDG S, THEN N, AND THEN S, AGAIN, AND THAT THEY CONCLUSIVELY RECEIVED A CLRNC TO 6000 FT. THE FLC IS CONCERNED THAT THEY MAY HAVE DEVIATED FROM AN ALT ASSIGNMENT.
Narrative: ON CHESTERFIELD 8 ARR ACFT CLRED TO 5000 FT FROM 11000 FT. ATIS CHANGED TO N LNDG THEN BACK TO S LNDG. APCH ASKED US TO CLB TO 9000 FT. PASSING 6500 FT, APCH ASK US TO LEVEL AT 6000 FT. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS ATIS DURING APCH HAD S LNDG, CHANGED TO N LNDG THEN BACK TO S LNDG. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 329920: DURING CTF ARR TO CHARLOTTE, CLRED FROM 11000 FT TO 5000 FT. ONCE LEVEL AT 5000 FT, APCH ASKED US TO VERIFY ALT AND CLB TO 9000 FT. DURING CLB PASSING 6500 FT APCH ASKED US TO LEVEL OFF AT 6000 FT. CONTRIBUTING TO THE POSSIBLE CONFUSION WAS THE 3 CHANGES IN THE ATIS AT THE TIME FROM LNDG RWY 18 TO LNDG RWY 36 THEN BACK TO LNDG RWY 18. CONSIDERABLE DISCUSSION ON THE APCH FREQ ABOUT THE CHANGE.
