Narrative:
Taxied down runway 35 in order to get to runway 12L for takeoff. Taxi instructions were to taxi from GA ramp to runway 12L. No specifics were given. I meant to taxi down runway 31. Taxied out on taxiway K, when I got to a runway I turned right. I should have crossed runway and continued down taxiway K to runway 31. Turned right on one runway too soon! It was night which makes it harder to identify txwys than during day. Hills at this part of airport contribute to difficulty in identing where to taxi. I notice this at night, but not in daytime. Attention also divided between taxiing and running taxi checklist. Most important the lack of specific taxi instructions other than 'taxi runway 12L' and the fact they use a runway for taxi makes it very easy! At any other airport you don't have to taxi on an active runway to get where you need to go.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF A SUPPLEMENTAL CARGO OP TAXIED ONTO RWY 35 INSTEAD OF RWY 31. RPTR STATES THAT INSTRUCTIONS WERE NOT SPECIFIC AND BELIEVES THAT SINCE IT IS NOT A COMMON PRACTICE TO USE A RWY FOR TAXI AT OTHER ARPTS, THAT THIS PRACTICE MAKES IT VERY EASY TO TAXI ONTO RWYS AND EVEN THE WRONG RWY. UNAUTH RWY ENTRY UNAUTH RWY OP.
Narrative: TAXIED DOWN RWY 35 IN ORDER TO GET TO RWY 12L FOR TKOF. TAXI INSTRUCTIONS WERE TO TAXI FROM GA RAMP TO RWY 12L. NO SPECIFICS WERE GIVEN. I MEANT TO TAXI DOWN RWY 31. TAXIED OUT ON TXWY K, WHEN I GOT TO A RWY I TURNED R. I SHOULD HAVE CROSSED RWY AND CONTINUED DOWN TXWY K TO RWY 31. TURNED R ON ONE RWY TOO SOON! IT WAS NIGHT WHICH MAKES IT HARDER TO IDENT TXWYS THAN DURING DAY. HILLS AT THIS PART OF ARPT CONTRIBUTE TO DIFFICULTY IN IDENTING WHERE TO TAXI. I NOTICE THIS AT NIGHT, BUT NOT IN DAYTIME. ATTN ALSO DIVIDED BTWN TAXIING AND RUNNING TAXI CHKLIST. MOST IMPORTANT THE LACK OF SPECIFIC TAXI INSTRUCTIONS OTHER THAN 'TAXI RWY 12L' AND THE FACT THEY USE A RWY FOR TAXI MAKES IT VERY EASY! AT ANY OTHER ARPT YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAXI ON AN ACTIVE RWY TO GET WHERE YOU NEED TO GO.
