Narrative:
The filed plan was stl turbo 2, pocket city to evv. Out of stl airspace we were handed off to ZKC on a vector heading. Then ZKC handed us off to ZME on a heading. I may have misunderstood the vector instructions. I thought it was just a heading. So I held the heading. He may have said hold the heading to join the transition. Memphis called and asked if we were on a heading or told to join the transition. At that time, if we were supposed to join and we did not, we would have been off of the turn towards the pocket city transition, by 8 mi DME. No aircraft were shown on the TCASII at that time so there was no conflict. There was a breakdown in communication between controller, PNF, and the PF. Center gave us direct to pocket city.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A COMMUTER FLC WAS 8 MI PAST THE TURN TO JOIN THE TRANSITION ON A SID WHEN THEY WERE QUESTIONED AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THEY HAD RECEIVED A CLRNC TO JOIN THE TRANSITION BY THE ARTCC RADAR CTLR. RPTR (PF) WAS UNCERTAIN OF ACTUAL CLRNC.
