Narrative:
At approximately XA05Z we were #1 in alley between terminals. Called lax ground control 'air carrier flight XXX, taxi for takeoff, trm transition, ATIS information.' we received no immediate response from ground control but heard them talking to many other aircraft on the frequency. Approximately 40-50 seconds later, ground control issued this clearance: 'color aircraft, #1 in the alley holding short of taxiway C, turn left on taxiway B.' we replied 'roger, air carrier XXX.' while taxiing on taxiway B between C6 and C5, ground control called, 'air carrier taxiing out on taxiway B, who are you, you don't have a taxi clearance.' I replied, 'air carrier XXX, you told us to turn left on taxiway B.' no other contact was had with ground control and there was no apparent conflict with any other ground traffic on our taxi out.
