Narrative:
On departure from ord, center cleared us to FL240. Altitude selector set and armed for FL240. Aircraft was climbing at approximately 4000 FPM. Aircraft continued to climb through FL240, and reached FL245 before corrective action initiated. Speculate, one of the pilots inadvertently bumped vertical speed wheel close to altitude capture, disengaged the armed altitude. At the time of excursion, pilots were involved in changing frequency, re- establishing navaids (cleared direct) (slightly distraction).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ALTDEV ON CLB. THE ALT WAS SELECTED AND ARMED IN THE ALT WINDOW, BUT INADVERTENTLY DISARMED BY BUMPING THE VERT SPD WHEEL. FLC DISTR WITH OTHER DUTIES AS ACFT WAS APCHING LEVELOFF ALT, AND DIDN'T CATCH THE ALTDEV UNTIL THE ACFT HAD CLBED 500 FT.
Narrative: ON DEP FROM ORD, CTR CLRED US TO FL240. ALT SELECTOR SET AND ARMED FOR FL240. ACFT WAS CLBING AT APPROX 4000 FPM. ACFT CONTINUED TO CLB THROUGH FL240, AND REACHED FL245 BEFORE CORRECTIVE ACTION INITIATED. SPECULATE, ONE OF THE PLTS INADVERTENTLY BUMPED VERT SPD WHEEL CLOSE TO ALT CAPTURE, DISENGAGED THE ARMED ALT. AT THE TIME OF EXCURSION, PLTS WERE INVOLVED IN CHANGING FREQ, RE- ESTABLISHING NAVAIDS (CLRED DIRECT) (SLIGHTLY DISTR).
