Narrative:
On descent to 2000 ft to cross reebo on localizer runway 27 at san, the autoplt did not capture altitude. Manually selecting altitude hold did not stop descent. Autoplt was punched off, descent was stopped at 1600 ft, and we climbed back to 2000 ft. WX was VFR. No safety problem.

Title: WHEN THE AUTOPLT FAILED TO CAPTURE THE ASSIGNED ALT ON AN APCH, A DC10 FLC ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT THE SIT BY SELECTING THE ALT HOLD. WHEN THE ALT HOLD FAILED TO STOP THE DSCNT, THE FLC THEN SWITCHED TO MANUAL FLT, BUT WERE NOW 400 FT BELOW THE ASSIGNED ALT.
Narrative: ON DSCNT TO 2000 FT TO CROSS REEBO ON LOC RWY 27 AT SAN, THE AUTOPLT DID NOT CAPTURE ALT. MANUALLY SELECTING ALT HOLD DID NOT STOP DSCNT. AUTOPLT WAS PUNCHED OFF, DSCNT WAS STOPPED AT 1600 FT, AND WE CLBED BACK TO 2000 FT. WX WAS VFR. NO SAFETY PROB.
