Narrative:
Approximately 30-50 mi south of nepta intersection at FL290 experienced severe turbulence while deviating around WX. Autoplt disengaged we gained approximately 200 ft and lost 500 ft. While in turbulence left engine compressor stalled for approximately 20-30 seconds. When clear of turbulence, which lasted for approximately 30 seconds to 1 min, left engine compressor stall cleared. We declared an emergency but due to precipitation static we were unable to hear ATC. All flight attendants were seated and had been instructed to do so approximately 2-3 mins before incident. Passenger had been advised by both myself and flight attendants to stay seated with their seat belts on prior to incident. WX radar showed no significant returns within 25-30 mi of aircraft. Diverted to tpa, landed uneventfully. No passenger or crew injured.
