Narrative:
Tower informed me in exact words, 'traffic you are following is rolling out final.' I took this to mean that my traffic was 'rolling out' on the runway. Wrongly, I assumed my traffic was no longer a factor and proceeded to turn final. Tower immediately came on and informed me I was cutting off my traffic. I was immediately instructed to go around and set up a final for runway 5 (the active was runway 10). No other mishaps ensued. The problem here is 2-FOLD: 1) I misunderstood what 'rollout' meant to the controller. The controller should have been more clear and used 'turning final.' 2) I should not have assumed my traffic was already on the runway and therefore set up for final without looking. Though the mishap was also my fault, I feel that certain ambiguous words such as 'rollout' used in sits of certain points in the pattern or airspace should be closely monitored by the controller and the pilot.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: INEXPERIENCED PLT MISUNDERSTOOD TWR XMISSION THAT HIS TFC WAS ROLLING OUT ON FINAL AND ASSUMED THE TFC WAS ROLLING OUT ON RWY. CONSEQUENTLY, RPTR CUT IN FRONT OF HIS TFC ACFT AND TWR INTERVENED, HAVING RPTR GAR.
Narrative: TWR INFORMED ME IN EXACT WORDS, 'TFC YOU ARE FOLLOWING IS ROLLING OUT FINAL.' I TOOK THIS TO MEAN THAT MY TFC WAS 'ROLLING OUT' ON THE RWY. WRONGLY, I ASSUMED MY TFC WAS NO LONGER A FACTOR AND PROCEEDED TO TURN FINAL. TWR IMMEDIATELY CAME ON AND INFORMED ME I WAS CUTTING OFF MY TFC. I WAS IMMEDIATELY INSTRUCTED TO GAR AND SET UP A FINAL FOR RWY 5 (THE ACTIVE WAS RWY 10). NO OTHER MISHAPS ENSUED. THE PROB HERE IS 2-FOLD: 1) I MISUNDERSTOOD WHAT 'ROLLOUT' MEANT TO THE CTLR. THE CTLR SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE CLR AND USED 'TURNING FINAL.' 2) I SHOULD NOT HAVE ASSUMED MY TFC WAS ALREADY ON THE RWY AND THEREFORE SET UP FOR FINAL WITHOUT LOOKING. THOUGH THE MISHAP WAS ALSO MY FAULT, I FEEL THAT CERTAIN AMBIGUOUS WORDS SUCH AS 'ROLLOUT' USED IN SITS OF CERTAIN POINTS IN THE PATTERN OR AIRSPACE SHOULD BE CLOSELY MONITORED BY THE CTLR AND THE PLT.
