Narrative:
We landed runway 12L, taxied off runway on taxiway right. We switched from tower to ground frequency and told to hold short of runway 12R on taxiway right. After about 1 1/2 mins we were told to get ready to expedite across runway 12R. When we were told to expedite across runway 12R we checked and saw what we thought was a DC9 on landing rollout. About this time we were about 1/4 on the runway and then ground control asked if we could hold short! Looked again down runway and saw DC9 on takeoff roll (just after liftoff). There was no way to stop, so we added some power and got across as fast as we could. The DC9 got airborne about 3000 ft away from us and vertical was no closer than 500 ft. I think this situation could have been avoided if rather going to ground control after clearing runway 12L we went to runway 12R tower frequency and they cleared us across. It would also have given us a more situational awareness on takeoff/landing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AFTER INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT BY GND CTLR, THE CTLR THEN TOLD FLC TO EXPEDITE ACROSS RWY. AS THEY STARTED ACROSS THE CTLR ASKED IF THEY COULD STILL HOLD SHORT. THEY WERE ON THE RWY AND SAW AN ACFT ON TKOF ROLL, SO THEY EXPEDITED ACROSS. RPTR SUGGESTS THAT, WHEN BTWN RWYS THEY STAY WITH TWR FREQ TO MAINTAIN BETTER SITUATIONAL AWARENESS.
Narrative: WE LANDED RWY 12L, TAXIED OFF RWY ON TXWY R. WE SWITCHED FROM TWR TO GND FREQ AND TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 12R ON TXWY R. AFTER ABOUT 1 1/2 MINS WE WERE TOLD TO GET READY TO EXPEDITE ACROSS RWY 12R. WHEN WE WERE TOLD TO EXPEDITE ACROSS RWY 12R WE CHKED AND SAW WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS A DC9 ON LNDG ROLLOUT. ABOUT THIS TIME WE WERE ABOUT 1/4 ON THE RWY AND THEN GND CTL ASKED IF WE COULD HOLD SHORT! LOOKED AGAIN DOWN RWY AND SAW DC9 ON TKOF ROLL (JUST AFTER LIFTOFF). THERE WAS NO WAY TO STOP, SO WE ADDED SOME PWR AND GOT ACROSS AS FAST AS WE COULD. THE DC9 GOT AIRBORNE ABOUT 3000 FT AWAY FROM US AND VERT WAS NO CLOSER THAN 500 FT. I THINK THIS SIT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF RATHER GOING TO GND CTL AFTER CLRING RWY 12L WE WENT TO RWY 12R TWR FREQ AND THEY CLRED US ACROSS. IT WOULD ALSO HAVE GIVEN US A MORE SITUATIONAL AWARENESS ON TKOF/LNDG.
