Narrative:

Over baltimore VOR first officer asked me if I heard anything unusual. I took off my headset and indeed heard a grinding sound. We searched our instruments to find the right hydraulic pump pressure indicator was fluctuating between 0 and 1500 psi ( in sync with the noise observed). First officer ran the QRH and then we switched controls and I again ran the QRH to verify everything complete. The hydraulic system completely failed thus we were required to lower the landing gear via the emergency method. An emergency was declared and we received vectors for an ILS to runway 19L iad. The approach and landing were uneventful, with the aircraft stopped on the runway and later towed to parking. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that the aircraft was a british aerospace model jetstream 32 which was found to have a leak in one of the gear up lines causing the hydraulic fluid to be lost after gear retraction. The flaps did come down to 10 percent before all fluid was lost. The reporter has not experienced any other problems with the hydraulic system of this aircraft.

Title: FLC OF AN LTT DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED TO LAND AFTER EXPERIENCING A COMPLETE HYD FAILURE DUE TO A LEAK IN AN UP PRESSURE HYD LINE.

Narrative: OVER BALTIMORE VOR FO ASKED ME IF I HEARD ANYTHING UNUSUAL. I TOOK OFF MY HEADSET AND INDEED HEARD A GRINDING SOUND. WE SEARCHED OUR INSTS TO FIND THE R HYD PUMP PRESSURE INDICATOR WAS FLUCTUATING BTWN 0 AND 1500 PSI ( IN SYNC WITH THE NOISE OBSERVED). FO RAN THE QRH AND THEN WE SWITCHED CTLS AND I AGAIN RAN THE QRH TO VERIFY EVERYTHING COMPLETE. THE HYD SYS COMPLETELY FAILED THUS WE WERE REQUIRED TO LOWER THE LNDG GEAR VIA THE EMER METHOD. AN EMER WAS DECLARED AND WE RECEIVED VECTORS FOR AN ILS TO RWY 19L IAD. THE APCH AND LNDG WERE UNEVENTFUL, WITH THE ACFT STOPPED ON THE RWY AND LATER TOWED TO PARKING. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT THE ACFT WAS A BRITISH AEROSPACE MODEL JETSTREAM 32 WHICH WAS FOUND TO HAVE A LEAK IN ONE OF THE GEAR UP LINES CAUSING THE HYD FLUID TO BE LOST AFTER GEAR RETRACTION. THE FLAPS DID COME DOWN TO 10 PERCENT BEFORE ALL FLUID WAS LOST. THE RPTR HAS NOT EXPERIENCED ANY OTHER PROBS WITH THE HYD SYS OF THIS ACFT.
