Narrative:
En route from aus to crq with fuel stop dmn. Received and copied rerte instructions. On V458 wbound west of ipl VOR and east of kumba intersection. Started right turn to join V458 too early, was not yet at kumba intersection. The mistake was brought to my attention by ZLA. I thought my DME was set to read off of the #1 navigation radio, but it was actually reading off of the #2 navigation radio, which was tuned to a different VOR. ATC advised that R2510A and kane south MOA were in my route of flight and that MOA was 'hot.' single pilot operation, inoperative autoplt, and 6 hours flying time (2 1/2 in IMC), along with pilot fatigue and unfamiliarity with geographic area were contributing factors. I was trying to make unfamiliar airport while still daylight to keep appointment with a customer.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C414 PLT INADVERTENTLY BEGAN AN EARLY TURN TOWARD RESTR AIRSPACE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO INTERCEPT AN AIRWAY. THE DME SELECTION WAS ON A DIFFERENT VOR FROM THE ONE THAT WAS SET UP FOR THE RTE. THE ARTCC RADAR CTLR INTERVENED.
Narrative: ENRTE FROM AUS TO CRQ WITH FUEL STOP DMN. RECEIVED AND COPIED RERTE INSTRUCTIONS. ON V458 WBOUND W OF IPL VOR AND E OF KUMBA INTXN. STARTED R TURN TO JOIN V458 TOO EARLY, WAS NOT YET AT KUMBA INTXN. THE MISTAKE WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTN BY ZLA. I THOUGHT MY DME WAS SET TO READ OFF OF THE #1 NAV RADIO, BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY READING OFF OF THE #2 NAV RADIO, WHICH WAS TUNED TO A DIFFERENT VOR. ATC ADVISED THAT R2510A AND KANE S MOA WERE IN MY RTE OF FLT AND THAT MOA WAS 'HOT.' SINGLE PLT OP, INOP AUTOPLT, AND 6 HRS FLYING TIME (2 1/2 IN IMC), ALONG WITH PLT FATIGUE AND UNFAMILIARITY WITH GEOGRAPHIC AREA WERE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS. I WAS TRYING TO MAKE UNFAMILIAR ARPT WHILE STILL DAYLIGHT TO KEEP APPOINTMENT WITH A CUSTOMER.
