Narrative:
First officer was flying this trip (flight XXX) between bombay and frankfurt. The FMS was loaded by the first officer and checked by me prior to departure. The flight plan was loaded correctly. The first point on the flight plan was sugid intersection, 200 mi west of bombay. No SID was indicated on the flight plan. We did discuss the sugid 1 SID which is a normal departure when leaving bombay wbound. Just prior to takeoff we were issued the sugid 1 SID and also a transponder code. There are 7 pages of sids in the FMS to accommodate the 34 possible departures. On page 6 we selected sg 1 which we incorrectly assumed was the sugid 1. It was a songah 1 SID. After takeoff we realized the course as depicted was wrong. Corrective action was taken to correct back on course. Recommend sids stored in the FMC not be abbreviated. Also, clrncs should be issued at the gate as they normally are and not just prior to takeoff when cockpit workload is high.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC WAS PREPARED FOR THE SID 'SUGID 1' WHICH WOULD TAKE THEM TO THEIR FIRST CHK POINT ON THE FLT PLAN. BUT, WHEN SELECTING THE SID FROM THE DATABASE, THEY SELECTED SG 1 WHICH WAS A DIFFERENT SID 'SONGAH 1.' THEY RECOGNIZED THE ERROR AFTER TKOF WHEN THE COURSE LINE DIDN'T AGREE WITH THEIR KNOWN NAV INSTRUCTIONS. THEY WENT TO MANUAL AND CORRECTED ACCORDINGLY.
Narrative: FO WAS FLYING THIS TRIP (FLT XXX) BTWN BOMBAY AND FRANKFURT. THE FMS WAS LOADED BY THE FO AND CHKED BY ME PRIOR TO DEP. THE FLT PLAN WAS LOADED CORRECTLY. THE FIRST POINT ON THE FLT PLAN WAS SUGID INTXN, 200 MI W OF BOMBAY. NO SID WAS INDICATED ON THE FLT PLAN. WE DID DISCUSS THE SUGID 1 SID WHICH IS A NORMAL DEP WHEN LEAVING BOMBAY WBOUND. JUST PRIOR TO TKOF WE WERE ISSUED THE SUGID 1 SID AND ALSO A XPONDER CODE. THERE ARE 7 PAGES OF SIDS IN THE FMS TO ACCOMMODATE THE 34 POSSIBLE DEPS. ON PAGE 6 WE SELECTED SG 1 WHICH WE INCORRECTLY ASSUMED WAS THE SUGID 1. IT WAS A SONGAH 1 SID. AFTER TKOF WE REALIZED THE COURSE AS DEPICTED WAS WRONG. CORRECTIVE ACTION WAS TAKEN TO CORRECT BACK ON COURSE. RECOMMEND SIDS STORED IN THE FMC NOT BE ABBREVIATED. ALSO, CLRNCS SHOULD BE ISSUED AT THE GATE AS THEY NORMALLY ARE AND NOT JUST PRIOR TO TKOF WHEN COCKPIT WORKLOAD IS HIGH.
