Narrative:
I was the first officer on air carrier flight pit-fll, may/xx/96. Shortly after departure, I realized I had failed to obtain our IFR clearance. I was able to obtain departure frequency from tower and squawk from departure control. ATC was evidently unaware we did not receive our clearance. This flight was the first flight of a 2 leg 1-DAY trip. I believe this event occurred partly due to distraction caused by non operational discussion in the cockpit during our preflight preparation. Neither the captain or myself caught the oversight during our departure or takeoff briefings. I will be certain to perform all of my duties while establishing a rapport and open communication with other crew members (CRM). A possible other solution could be to program aircraft ACARS software to flash a message after engine start if a clearance has not been received at airports with pre departure clearance available.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN MD82 FAILED TO OBTAIN THEIR PDC FLT PLAN AND TOOK OFF WITHOUT AN IFR FLT PLAN. THEY DID OBTAIN DEP CTL FREQ AND XPONDER SQUAWK AND THEN THEIR PDC IN ORDER TO CONTINUE ON WITH THEIR FLT.
Narrative: I WAS THE FO ON ACR FLT PIT-FLL, MAY/XX/96. SHORTLY AFTER DEP, I REALIZED I HAD FAILED TO OBTAIN OUR IFR CLRNC. I WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN DEP FREQ FROM TWR AND SQUAWK FROM DEP CTL. ATC WAS EVIDENTLY UNAWARE WE DID NOT RECEIVE OUR CLRNC. THIS FLT WAS THE FIRST FLT OF A 2 LEG 1-DAY TRIP. I BELIEVE THIS EVENT OCCURRED PARTLY DUE TO DISTR CAUSED BY NON OPERATIONAL DISCUSSION IN THE COCKPIT DURING OUR PREFLT PREPARATION. NEITHER THE CAPT OR MYSELF CAUGHT THE OVERSIGHT DURING OUR DEP OR TKOF BRIEFINGS. I WILL BE CERTAIN TO PERFORM ALL OF MY DUTIES WHILE ESTABLISHING A RAPPORT AND OPEN COM WITH OTHER CREW MEMBERS (CRM). A POSSIBLE OTHER SOLUTION COULD BE TO PROGRAM ACFT ACARS SOFTWARE TO FLASH A MESSAGE AFTER ENG START IF A CLRNC HAS NOT BEEN RECEIVED AT ARPTS WITH PDC AVAILABLE.
