Narrative:
Clearance was porte 1 to avenal as filed, SID requires turn to 180 degrees at 6 DME. Tower cleared us for takeoff. As power was added and takeoff roll began tower again called us and then said disregard. I began wondering what tower wanted. At gear up, pilot's navigation CDI began rapid full scale deflection either side of center. Contacted departure. At sfo 4.7 NM pilot's navigation flagged/failed. Copilot had tuned navigation #2 to pye 135 degree radial. Momentarily could not identify 6 DME turn point. Started left turn to 180 degrees. Departure called 'ask if we were complying with SID.' we informed a turn to 180 degrees. Possibly overflew 6 DME fix. During turn departure cleared direct desca intersection. Programmed desca in navigation #1 FMS, but for unknown reason FMS skewed to sfo, sfo not in flight plan. Received vectors until FMS could be reprogrammed. I felt call from tower during takeoff roll disrupted chain of thought process for the departure. Possibly could have reacted different to navigation failure. Recommend not to be in too big a hurry to change navigation #2 to second phase of departure. After reprogram FMS worked normal. However, normal VOR navigation on navigation #1 was not functional for the remainder of that leg. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: callback made to verify the aircraft type. Reporter had listed aircraft as G1159 and analysts were unable to identify accurately. The aircraft was verified as a gulfstream ii. Reporter had no additional information to contribute to the report other than confirming that the aircraft came off the line in 1979 and had an FMS in it at that time.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DURING INITIAL CLBOUT, PF, CAPT VOR NAV FAILED ALONG WITH THE DME. FO HAD TUNED THE VOR FOR THE NEXT TURN POINT, SO FLC WENT BEYOND THE TURN LIMITS ON THE SID. ATC QUESTIONED THEM AT THE SAME TIME THEY HAD COMMENCED A TURN.
Narrative: CLRNC WAS PORTE 1 TO AVENAL AS FILED, SID REQUIRES TURN TO 180 DEGS AT 6 DME. TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF. AS PWR WAS ADDED AND TKOF ROLL BEGAN TWR AGAIN CALLED US AND THEN SAID DISREGARD. I BEGAN WONDERING WHAT TWR WANTED. AT GEAR UP, PLT'S NAV CDI BEGAN RAPID FULL SCALE DEFLECTION EITHER SIDE OF CTR. CONTACTED DEP. AT SFO 4.7 NM PLT'S NAV FLAGGED/FAILED. COPLT HAD TUNED NAV #2 TO PYE 135 DEG RADIAL. MOMENTARILY COULD NOT IDENT 6 DME TURN POINT. STARTED L TURN TO 180 DEGS. DEP CALLED 'ASK IF WE WERE COMPLYING WITH SID.' WE INFORMED A TURN TO 180 DEGS. POSSIBLY OVERFLEW 6 DME FIX. DURING TURN DEP CLRED DIRECT DESCA INTXN. PROGRAMMED DESCA IN NAV #1 FMS, BUT FOR UNKNOWN REASON FMS SKEWED TO SFO, SFO NOT IN FLT PLAN. RECEIVED VECTORS UNTIL FMS COULD BE REPROGRAMMED. I FELT CALL FROM TWR DURING TKOF ROLL DISRUPTED CHAIN OF THOUGHT PROCESS FOR THE DEP. POSSIBLY COULD HAVE REACTED DIFFERENT TO NAV FAILURE. RECOMMEND NOT TO BE IN TOO BIG A HURRY TO CHANGE NAV #2 TO SECOND PHASE OF DEP. AFTER REPROGRAM FMS WORKED NORMAL. HOWEVER, NORMAL VOR NAV ON NAV #1 WAS NOT FUNCTIONAL FOR THE REMAINDER OF THAT LEG. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: CALLBACK MADE TO VERIFY THE ACFT TYPE. RPTR HAD LISTED ACFT AS G1159 AND ANALYSTS WERE UNABLE TO IDENT ACCURATELY. THE ACFT WAS VERIFIED AS A GULFSTREAM II. RPTR HAD NO ADDITIONAL INFO TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE RPT OTHER THAN CONFIRMING THAT THE ACFT CAME OFF THE LINE IN 1979 AND HAD AN FMS IN IT AT THAT TIME.
