Narrative:
On climb out tailpipe hot light came on. We followed memory items, light stayed on. We then proceeded with emergency procedures via tailpipe hot checklist. This involves shutting down the engine. We secured the left engine and declared an emergency. ATC radar vectored us for an ILS runway 4R approach at jfk. We followed the 1 engine inoperative descent and approach checklists. Flew the approach and landed without incident.
