Narrative:
We were taxiing out to runway 11R at msp. As we were taxiing we were finishing up our checklist and wondering about the WX along our route of flight. Ground control said to speed up and we would be #1 at the runway ahead of a DC9 that was also taxiing out on the parallel taxiway. The first officer was telling the flight attendant to be seated, and when I looked up, I was on the edge of the active runway. I had missed my turn on the parallel taxiway, had taxied out past the hold short line, and was sticking out onto the runway. About this time the first officer was back with me. I was just going to advise ATC, when they cleared me into position and hold. We departed and flew the trip uneventfully, but still shaken. We are not based at this airport, but I have flown out of it off and on for 7 yrs. We were departing at a very slow time so there was no one on final and the txwys were clear except for the DC9. I was well rested, the first officer had taken the red eye flight to work from phoenix to dtw and had little sleep. We were 6 hours into our trip schedule. Supplemental information from acn 337960: at the moment of the turn, the captain was looking inside to change frequencys from ground to tower. I was inclined to think we were given clearance since we were previously told that we were #1.

Title: A COMMUTER FLC INADVERTENTLY TAXIED ONTO A RWY AT MSP. THE ATCT GND CTLR HAD ADVISED THE CREW THAT THEY COULD DEPART AHEAD OF A DC9 IF THEY EXPEDITED THEIR TAXI. JUST AS THE CREW RECOGNIZED THE ERROR, THEY WERE CLRED INTO POS ON THE RWY.
