Narrative:
As we contacted departure control they told us tower reported smoke out of our left engine. We saw no smoke and there were no indications of a problem on the engine instruments. We declared an emergency and returned to the airport. Tower then told us there was just a little more smoke than usual. We had maintenance inspect it and there was no problem found. We did find a bird strike on the left wing and maintenance inspected it also.
