Narrative:
On final approach to runway 24R in lax, our first knowledge of a potential conflict was when approach cleared air carrier Y to a 'visual to runway 24L, keep air carrier X in sight.' we switched to tower and checked in and tower said 'air carrier Y, confirm you have air carrier X in sight.' they replied affirmative, and were cleared to land. We got a TCASII RA when air carrier Y passed within 1 mi of our tail and 200 ft above us. We continued to get TA's and RA's as air carrier Y pulled up and abeam us at our 9 O'clock position and stayed there till touchdown. Called tower on the phone and they said they are aware of the problem, that they get 2-3 phone calls a day on the same type problems, but as long as the commuters don't pass the jets it's legal. Corrective action would be to increase the separation somehow on visual approachs.
