Narrative:
I flew from Q99 to 4SD with a planned stop at 057. On the Q99 to 057 leg, I attempted to contact rancho (murietta) radio on 122.4 while passing stockton. I was unable to contact them, so I kept flying to 057. Near 057, I tried to contact riverside radio on 122.2 (as depicted on a VFR book, flight guide). Again, no contact. At 057 I made a low pass (on runway 16), checking the wind, and the runway for obstructions/closure. I did note that an aircraft was preparing for departure on runway 34. As I came in to land on runway 16, that aircraft departed on runway 34 (this arrival/departure pattern is SOP for bridgeport). I announced my position on CTAF, and there was no conflict as I rolled out on final and the other aircraft departed and turned away. After landing, I learned that the field had been closed earlier in the day due to motorcycle drag races. At that time 'X's' had been installed showing that the runway was closed. The 'X's' had been removed by the time I arrived. Since the runway was clear and did not appear to be closed anymore, I departed soon after landing. There were no telephones at the airport and no radio contact with FSS possible from the ground (or airborne either). I believe that I was legal to land/takeoff, but the NOTAMS (which I was able to obtain from rno FSS, after I took off from 057, and near minden, nv) did specify that the field was closed until XA00 on jul/xx/96 (the following day). Did the removal of the 'X's' modify the NOTAM? I always try to get the NOTAMS/WX airborne, if possible (and if the WX is obviously ok, ca summertime, etc), due to the difficulty contacting the FSS by telephone. One must allot a minimum of 30 mins for dealing with the FSS and the many telephone options. More often than not, one must wait an additional 5-10 mins to get a 'live' FSS briefer. Perhaps NOTAM service using touch- tone phones would be helpful. Also, a WWW (web) page could be used to disseminate NOTAM, etc.

Title: RPTR PLT LANDED ON RWY WHICH HAD BEEN NOTAMED CLOSED. WHEN FLYING OVER THE ARPT THERE WERE NO X'S ON THE RWYS AND AN ACFT WAS TAKING OFF. AFTER LNDG, RPTR LEARNED THAT THE ARPT WAS CLOSED UNTIL THE NEXT DAY.
Narrative: I FLEW FROM Q99 TO 4SD WITH A PLANNED STOP AT 057. AT 057 I MADE A LOW PASS (ON RWY 16), CHKING THE WIND, AND THE RWY FOR OBSTRUCTIONS/CLOSURE. I DID NOTE THAT AN ACFT WAS PREPARING FOR DEP ON RWY 34. AS I CAME IN TO LAND ON RWY 16, THAT ACFT DEPARTED ON RWY 34 (THIS ARR/DEP PATTERN IS SOP FOR BRIDGEPORT). I ANNOUNCED MY POS ON CTAF, AND THERE WAS NO CONFLICT AS I ROLLED OUT ON FINAL AND THE OTHER ACFT DEPARTED AND TURNED AWAY. AFTER LNDG, I LEARNED THAT THE FIELD HAD BEEN CLOSED EARLIER IN THE DAY DUE TO MOTORCYCLE DRAG RACES. AT THAT TIME 'X'S' HAD BEEN INSTALLED SHOWING THAT THE RWY WAS CLOSED. THE 'X'S' HAD BEEN REMOVED BY THE TIME I ARRIVED. SINCE THE RWY WAS CLR AND DID NOT APPEAR TO BE CLOSED ANYMORE, I DEPARTED SOON AFTER LNDG. THERE WERE NO TELEPHONES AT THE ARPT AND NO RADIO CONTACT WITH FSS POSSIBLE FROM THE GND (OR AIRBORNE EITHER). I BELIEVE THAT I WAS LEGAL TO LAND/TKOF, BUT THE NOTAMS (WHICH I WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN FROM RNO FSS, AFTER I TOOK OFF FROM 057, AND NEAR MINDEN, NV) DID SPECIFY THAT THE FIELD WAS CLOSED UNTIL XA00 ON JUL/XX/96 (THE FOLLOWING DAY). PERHAPS NOTAM SVC USING TOUCH- TONE PHONES WOULD BE HELPFUL. ALSO, A WWW (WEB) PAGE COULD BE USED TO DISSEMINATE NOTAM, ETC.
