Narrative:
On ATR72 aircraft, flap fairings are showing unusual wear. On 2-3 aircraft, I have noticed the fairings just outboard of the engines are cracking where they mount on and that the fairings can be then moved sideways in both directions. My first officer has been keeping more detailed notes and he has noticed 7 bad fairings since early may/xx/96. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter flies the ATR72 and 42, based at ord. Apparently his air carrier has taken care of most of these problems and stiffened the fairings. The reporter considers the problem to be fixed.
